Questions

What is a check digit?

The last digit of an EAN, UPC or GTIN is calculated from the others (GS1 modulo 10). A wrong last digit means a typo or a damaged code: marketplaces and Google Shopping reject it.

Why did Excel break my barcodes?

Excel can remove leading zeros or display scientific notation such as 4.00638E+12. Displaying scientific notation does not always mean the stored digits are lost. Compare the original barcode and export the column as text.

Do I need valid GTINs for Google Shopping?

Google requires the manufacturer's GTIN for products that have one, and disapproves offers with invalid GTINs. In-store codes (starting with 2) are not accepted as GTINs.

EAN or UPC?

UPC-A (12 digits) is used mainly in North America, EAN-13 elsewhere. A UPC with a leading 0 is the same product as the 13-digit EAN.

Is my data sent anywhere?

No. Everything runs in your browser.
