Shopify CSV columns: title, handle, variants and images

Start with the official headers, then check how the rows for each product fit together.

Check the structure

  1. Choose the right case. Creating a product requires Title; adding variants also requires URL handle. Updating products requires both.
  2. Keep the dependencies. A variant column such as SKU also needs Option1 name and Option1 value. For an existing product, preserve the exact option names and values from its Shopify export. Do not replace them with Default Title to simplify the file.
  3. Check the images. An image URL must be publicly accessible. For an additional image on a simple product, add a row with the same handle and the image URL.

Shopify explains these columns and dependencies. The current names below follow that guide; Shopify also supports older headers. Compare them with the template you use, preserving their case. See header errors.

Example: a new simple product saved as a draft

URL handle,Title,Option1 name,Option1 value,SKU,Price,Status,Published on online store
example-product,Example product,Default Title,Default Title,00123,21.90,draft,false

Synthetic example with one default variant, no images and no inventory. These default options are for this new simple product only. Check that its handle does not already exist in the store. This file has not been imported into Shopify.

Can I sort the rows to make the file easier to read?

Sorting can separate products from their variants and images. Work on a copy and preserve each product’s row group. See Shopify’s warning about sorting.

A local check does not verify existing handles or the result of a Shopify import.
